5 Star Supplies PBDS

5 Star Cases has supplied Professional & Broadcast Digital Systems with a selection of flightcases to complete the building of a flyaway television studio for a client in Russia.

The order comprised three 17u and three 10u Tour Grade specification racks.

Rack 1 is used for video, Rack 2 for the VTRs and Rack3 for audio – the 10u racks provide all the monitoring. Each of the 17u racks has a sliding tray which provides a control surface for the three operators – camera control vision mixer / director and sound engineer. The system provides four broadcast cameras, audio and video for two VTRs together with full communications and monitoring.

PBDS, part of the Wescom group of companies, provides custom system engineering solutions from outside broadcast vehicles to major studio systems. PBDS is completely independent of manufacturing interests and provides its clients with an impartial and unbiased view. It prides itself on choosing the best and most cost-efficient solution to meet the client’s requirements and budget.

This is the second order PBDS have placed with 5 Star – following a series of cases made for a video wall they delivered to Syria. They were originally recommended to 5 Star by Lighthouse Technologies (who made the aforementioned video wall) and were extremely pleased with the result and so came right back to 5 Star as soon as they needed more cases. PBDS’s John Reid actually first bought cases from 5 Star back in 1998.

5 Star devised a nifty design to facilitate connecting all six cases together within a few minutes via a series of multiway plugs and sockets.

Tour Grade specification was chosen for its durability. Its 12mm ply construction and 30mm aluminium angle protection together with a tough black high-pressure laminate exterior is built to last. Castors were fitted to each of the racks; the 17u versions were plinth mounted to the base, while the 10u racks were ‘rear door’ mounted.
