Gus Dudgeon Foundation Chooses Harman Package for Primary Schools

GDF administrator Chris Hook explained: “We have received several requests for assistance with some sort of recording equipment from primary schools and decided to extend our scope to primary schools as we feel they are today’s grass roots of recording, with children as young as eight years old able to grasp sound recording principles thanks to modern computer based equipment.” He adds: “Until now we have been limited to providing a traditional studio facility to a few students in Reading but our new home should see us raising our profile and expanding the studio into an archive for modern music recording, among other projects.
The first of the Lexicon systems, along with a cheque for £300 towards a new PC, was donated to Robert Sandilands Primary School in Speen, Newbury, where they have recently built their own music room. “This means the children will have the opportunity to do some really exciting and sophisticated music. I’m sure they are going to love using the technology. I have to confess I’m really excited myself,” said music teacher Alison Horne.
“Educational provision in primary schools can easily become dominated by the core subjects of English, mathematics and science with time for the more creative subjects, like music, being squeezed. Equipment, like this new Lambda Studio will certainly enhance music within our school and help to foster a broad, balanced and enriching curriculum for our children,” said headteacher Richard Blofeld.
The LAMBDA Studio is packaged with the ubiquitous Cubase LE software that forms part of the secondary school curriculum.
“I would like to think we will be instrumental in preparing younger children for the concept of recorded sound so that they can really take advantage of the opportunities that secondary schools offer. I think Gus would approve,” said Hook.
The Lexicon system lets you record both a vocal track and an accompanying instrument at the same time (or two singers/ two instruments). It has two studio- quality balanced microphone inputs with phantom power for professional condenser microphones and TRS inserts that let you add outboard equipment such as compressors or equalizers. Two line level inputs are provided for adding keyboards, drum machines, turntables* or pre-recorded backing tracks from CD or MP3 players. A separate front-panel high-impedance input is included so you can plug your electric guitar or bass right in. Via the separate headphone jack, you can monitor as you record, listen to a backing or click track while recording or hear tracks played back from your computer. Balanced analog line outputs let you connect to powered monitor speakers or a mastering deck.
The Perception 100 is a large-diaphragm true condenser microphone offering solid build quality, good performance and excellent value. It delivers a classic warm, transparent sound that conforms to the stringent standards defined for AKG recording products.
