Christmas has come a little early this year for The Oldham College - thanks to Australian lighting manufacturer LSC Lighting Systems and their exclusive UK distributor White Light. An LSC maXim LP lighting console has been donated to the College in order to help the next generation of lighting technicians create spectacular lighting.

It was at this year’s PLASA Show, at which LSC announced the appointment of White Light as their distributor for the UK and Ireland, that LSC’s range of consoles, including the XTC, Minim and maXim ranges caught the attention of David Hughes from Oldham College.

Hughes subsequently approached LSC’s Pete Floyd to discuss the possibility of students on Oldham College’s BTEC National Diploma in Performing Arts (Technical) and BTEC First Diploma in Performing Arts (Production) courses being able to gain hands-on experience with LSC’s products. All part of the College’s efforts to make sure that students experience the widest possible range of equipment that they will subsequently find in professional working environments.

“When we looked through the list of Oldham College alumni since their entertainment technology courses began in 1983 - a list which includes people such as Adam Beamont of AC Lighting, Mike Oates of HSL, Richard Owen of the Royal Exchange Theatre, Matt Lever and Dave Wimpenny of the Royal Northern College of Music, Jason Kadama and Colin Smart of Lee Lighting North, Chris Cooper and Andy Scott of Lite Alt, Kevin Leach at the Oldham Coliseum, Andy Roman at the Manchester Palace, Dave Crowther of MCL Manchester - it was obvious just how good the teaching is and the quality of the people it trains,” comments LSC’s Pete Floyd.

"Both LSC and White Light believe that fostering talent is important for the lighting industry,” comments White Light’s marketing manager, Aubs Tredget. “There is no better way of showing our support than by providing the next generation of lighting people with the very best in training and the very latest lighting equipment.”

The maXim LP console offers 72 faders providing direct channel or playback control, soft patching of up to 1024 dimmers across two DMX universes, moving light control of up to 72 fixtures through LSC’s PatPad controller and effects engine, and either manual control, theatrical-style playback of cues or busked playback across up to 42 simultaneous playbacks. The LP is just one member of the maXim family, which offers models suitable for many scales of shows, venues and budgets.

The maXim LP was presented to the College by White Light’s exclusive product line manager, Julie Harper on behalf of LSC, at a presentation at the end of November. White Light’s training and development coordinator Simon Barrett was also on hand to get the College’s students up and running with the new console as quickly as possible, though the console’s interactive video operators manual will also help operators become comfortable with the console very quickly.

Models from the maXim range, and from LSC’s comprehensive range of dimming and data distribution products, are now available for demonstration at White Light’s base in Wimbledon, south London, details of which can be found on the White Light website. Full details of the complete LSC product range can be found on the LSC website, http://www.lsclighting.com.au.
