Not So Ice and Easy Due to Balmy Weather

Not So Ice and Easy Due to Balmy Weather

Stage Electrics is the UK distributor for rinks manufactured by Ice Word. The rinks are constructed of fold out aluminium, and this new technology is not only easy to install and maintain, but also has low operational implications. The system reacts much more quickly to changes in the weather than the old-fashioned rubber system.

With the fold-out aluminium skating rink the rink is filled with water, the freezing machines are switched on and within 12-24 hours, the rink can be opened for skating. This is in contrast to old style EPDM rinks, where it takes 36 hours of filling to produce a sufficiently thick layer of ice and the work usually has to be done at night when it is colder and even then, it cannot be too warm or too windy.

Speed of freezing was crucial to the rink Stage Electrics supplied to The Mall at Cribbs Causeway, a regional shopping centre on the outskirts of Bristol. The team led by Sam Saltmarsh, installed ice, lighting, sound and structures in less than a week to meet the launch deadline. The rink opened on time and runs until early January.

For the second year running Stage Electrics are working with Gloucester City Council to provide a 475mē ice rink for the Christmas season. The rink is situated in Kings Square in Gloucester city centre. Paul Greenwood lead the team to install all of the technical elements including ice, lighting, sound, structures and much of the finishing.

Stage Electrics’ final rink supplied this year is scheduled to open in Brighton on Boxing Day, the team will begin the install on the 23rd December just three days before. Thanks to the fold out aluminium technology this short installation time is now possible, it would be feasible to have a rink for a single day’s event.
