Demolition Art Made Feasible Thanks to Stage Electrics’ Expertise

For two weeks before its demolition in January 2006, one of Bristol's landmark buildings, Tollgate House, was turned into a giant canvas and project space by Blackout Arts, the Bristol-based artist collective.
Stage Electrics provided event health & safety management for the build and operation of this exciting project, coupled with all site infrastructure from power and lighting to cabins and access equipment.
'intimate~INTIMATE' involved giant video projectors exhibiting images on three sides of the 18 floor, nine-sided skyscraper, which was covered in white scaffold wrap. The project was enhanced by a synchronised FM radio broadcast available in central Bristol.
Following successful events at Bristol Nightsafe and Creative Bristol as event H&S coordinators and event management for Bristol City Council, Stage Electrics Safety Services were approached to assist with the ambitious project.
Stage Electrics Safety Services provided event health & safety management for the build and operation of this exciting project. In addition, safety services assisted Blackout Arts with the necessary documentation to successfully apply for a premises licence for the event site - one of the first of the new licences processed by Bristol City Council.
Brian Cleary, safety services business development manager said: "This is the fourth event we've worked on with Blackout Arts and, following their Stroll in the Dark with The Desperate Men in 2005, is by far their most ambitious yet! We've all had to jump through many hoops and think creatively about applying H&S regulations to what is effectively a demolition site.”
“We work hard at providing mediation and at facilitating service between artists and responsible officials and believe that there are almost always safe solutions to the wildest creative ideas. This will be a great way to get 2006 under way and will take some beating for shear scale!"
Tollgate House is being demolished as part of the £500 million redevelopment of Bristol’s central shopping area by the Bristol Alliance, this project is due for completion by autumn 2008.
