Industry Votes Carling Academy Brixton Favourite Venue at Total Production Awards 2006

Academy Music Group Limited (AMG) is delighted Carling Academy Brixton has been hailed ‘Favourite Venue’ at this year’s Total Production Magazine Awards 2006.

Voted for by the trade and production industry, Carling Academy Brixton beat off competition ahead of its new sister venue Carling Academy Newcastle, and Manchester Evening News Arena, Bournemouth BIC, Royal Albert Hall and City Of Manchester Stadium; to win the prestigious nomination for the second time.    Carling Academy Brixton - “the venerable home of all the most credible modern music” (London Evening Standard 31st July 2003) - has long been hailed London’s flagship venue, and has also scooped the NME “Best Live Venue” award on an incredible ten occasions between 1994 and 2005, proving its popularity with music fans and the media alike. Also in 2004, Brixton received the Time Out Award for Live Venue of the Year.

Built in 1929, its 4,921 flexible capacity makes it one of a kind on the circuit and combines the feeling of an electrifying arena-size atmosphere, with great views because of its sloping floor and incredible capabilities for production. Anyone who has waited for their favourite band to walk on stage at the South London venue will testify to its unbeatable atmosphere. Its magnificent art deco interior has been preserved and it houses Europe’s largest fixed stage, framed by an elaborate proscenium arch that is based on the design of the Rialto Bridge.

Commenting on winning the award, General Manager Nigel Downs says, As this award is voted for by the production industry, it’s great for everyone involved in running the Academy to be recognised as ‘Favourite Venue’. So many different factors must be taken into account, including ease of access in build up and de-rig, co-operation of the venue during these processes and we’re delighted these things are recognised from those people that work in most of the live venues in the UK, large and small.”

Carling Academy Brixton is a celebrated venue on the European and UK tour circuit with acts such as the Rolling Stones, Madonna, Bob Dylan, The Prodigy and so many more artists choosing to play the Academy because there isn’t an atmosphere to touch it.

This year, Carling Academy Brixton will celebrate 21 years as live entertainment venue.
