Joust the Ticket for Denon DJ
Denon DJ has put its weight (and brand support) behind a new DJ competition known as D-Joust, offering a pair of their new state-of-the-art DN-S3500 tabletop CD/MP3 players to the winner.
Sponsored by Fruityloopy Promotions, the event is already attracting some of London’s best unknown DJ’s, and reported more than 60 registrants in the first few weeks following announcement.
Fruityloopy was formed two years ago to promote SNUG party nights, and according to one of its founders, Danny Simper, the idea of the D-Joust DJ competition was prompted last year after attending a similar event.
Deciding to pitch it on a much larger scale they approached the promoter of the other event (Read the Crowd and Inigo Recordings) and secured permission to use some of the aspects of their competition.
The goal was to stage a set of heats and finals with high production values; become exposed to a host of new DJ’s and promoters; apply positive promotion; expand their mailing list and take the DJ competition to a higher level.
For the heat stages, contestants will play 45 minute sets at Covent Garden’s Retox Bar, where they will be marked by a panel of music industry judges; the winner of each heat automatically qualifies for the semis. Live recordings are made available soon after the event and the best runner-up is chosen to go through by public vote on the company’s website.
These final dates have now been confirmed. The semis will be held on June 10 at The Factory in Vauxhall (9pm-6am, with the competition starting at around 10pm), with the DJ’s this time playing a 30 minute slot. In the front room Absolution will be hosting a top line-up of up-and-coming talent to complement the Joust.
The grand final will then take place on July 14 at Anexo in Farringdon (between 9pm-5am).
Denon were just one of a number of sponsors approached — and the DJ/lifestyle brand immediately pledged a pair of the coveted DN-S3500’s as competition prize. Others quickly followed suit — Ovenready Records, offered a day’s free studio time with technician; MN2S donated vinyl and CD's for the heat winners; Read The Crowd and Inigo Recordings also provded heavily-discounted studio time with technician.
In addition to these and other prizes, the winner is guaranteed prime time slots at future SNUG nights and free web space on their site for a year (to include the DJ’s profile, mp3 downloads and upcoming dates.)
Says Fruityloopy’s Danny Simper: “Overall the Joust is proving a great success and we are grateful to our sponsors for their generous donations. The standard of DJs has been superb and we’ve had participation from a great number of the best up-and-coming DJs on the circuit, as well as some of the most influential promoters too.”
