Stage Electrics Lights Up JCDecaux M4 Tower

In a first for the outdoor industry, Stage Electrics have brought unique lighting effects to the tallest purpose-built advertising structure in the UK. The JCDecaux M4 Tower, which is made almost entirely from glass, now features distinctive lighting effects that give instant colour transformation. Stage Electrics worked in partnership with James Thomas Engineering to design, supply, install and program the lighting.

The tower houses two massive advertising panels and is 29 metres high - the equivalent of a seven-storey building. Soaring over the elevated section of the M4 in West London, the structure makes an impressive addition to the London skyline.

80 Thomas PixelBricks were carefully positioned inside the tower, each brick capable of producing 16.9 million colour variations using four colour LED’s to produce full spectrum colour washes. The compact PixelBricks generate very little heat, run silently and consume very little power with an estimated lifespan of eight years constant operation.

Throughout the tower additive colour mixing was utilised to increase light output and produce the stunning results. Currently the 80 fixtures scroll seamlessly through primary lighting colours red, green and blue. If required each of the four coloured LED’s can be controlled individually to create chase sequences or adopt any colour to meet branding needs.

The lighting is controlled by a Martin Lightcorder an easy to operate lightshow recorder that allows users to record and playback any DMX-512 output in real time.

Stage Electrics worked effectively to accommodate the install through the height of the tower, 14 power supplies split over three levels, a base station, mid station and top station. The install was completed within a week.

Darren Beckley, business development manager for Stage Electrics, said: “JCDecaux’s aim was to create a high performance visual effect, by using PixelBricks we have realized the design brief. The lighting infrastructure of tower has a considerable additional capability that we look forward to exploring with JCDecaux in the future.”

Lawrence Haines, managing director large format, JCDecaux commented: “The PixelBrick fixtures satisfied the technical brief and have brought the tower to life. Like the structure, its lighting is state-of-the-art and adds real impact.”

JCDecaux pioneered the development of street furniture advertising and operates in 45 countries worldwide. It is estimated that, every day, 170 million people see JCDecaux panels; they currently operate a third of the UK's large format advertising panels.
