Studios Afloat with Star Events

When the BBC were tasked with getting the ‘Perfect Shot’ for the Royal opening of the Welsh Senedd, it became obvious that the only way to achieve this was to create a floating studio.

And they approached Star Events Group, given their extensive experience of building in and on the water.

The brief was to provide two separate studios, one for Welsh language, one for English, about 100 metres into Cardiff Bay, and for the studios to be at the same height as the Senedd.

Project manager Phil Addyman and crew boss Pete English, with a crew of nine life-jacketed staging technicians made a base of 14 securely linked pontoons, and then constructed a scaffold platform on top. This was crowned by two Media Structures studios, and a camera tower, which concealed a portaloo!

The structure was completed in five days. Strong winds delayed the operation of towing the structure from the construction quayside to the final position, but on the sixth day, an early start saw the arrival of an ocean going tug to tow it across the bay, to its final mooring position, attached to a floating marina.

Everyone was truly impressed with the finished result, including anchorman Huw Edwards, who commented on the technological marvel that he was broadcasting from.

Rhys Bevan,BBC events manager, commented: "This was a challenging project, managing as host broadcasters the media village and these unique studios; however thanks to the team here at BBC Wales events, and the support of Star Events Group, I think the viewers experienced the proceedings with what was truly a birds eye view!"
