grandMA Multimedia Consoles at Commonwealth Games
The Melbourne skyline erupted in a blaze of fireworks as the city celebrated the groundbreaking Opening Ceremony to mark the start of the Commonwealth Games on March 15th.
Approximately 80,000 people filled the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) to watch the ceremony and hear Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, declare the Games open. The Ceremony was watched by more than 100,000 people along banks of the Yarra river and in Live Sites. An estimated 1.5 billion people worldwide also tuned in to the start of the event.
The Opening Ceremony, master-minded by Andrew Walsh, has been described as spectacular, glittering, surreal, and an elaborate extravaganza. With approximately 1000 moving head fixtures to control lighting designer Mark Hammer needed power and reliability at his fingertips and with over 32,000 channels of control required he chose MA Lighting’s grandMA multimedia consoles. A total of six grandMA’s were located in the control room: two grandMA full-size consoles plus two full-size tracking back-up consoles and a grandMA light console plus another for tracking back-up. In addition, a grandMA full-size console was used for remote plotting.
