Showsec Take That and Party
The return of Take That this year has caused quite a stir, particularly for Showsec whose team at the Manchester Evening News Arena remember them from the first time round!
Take That performed six gigs at MEN this May, returning to their home town to a sell out audience every night. Mark, Howard, Jason and Gary’s spectacular show, 10 years after they first appeared excited the crowds as much as it did in 1996.
Having worked with the MEN Arena since it opened in 1995 known then as the Nynex Arena, Showsec once again handled the crowd management when Take That performed in Manchester.
In an industry with a particularly high staff turnover, the fact that 32 Showsec staff who worked on the first Take That tour are still at the arena for their come back tour 10 years on, reflects Showsec’s commitment to job satisfaction and staff retention. The ongoing training and development opportunities of staff are typified by Showsec area manager Paul Joy. He co-ordinated the crowd management for the 2006 gigs, having worked as a steward for the run of shows 10 years ago!
Working as part of the in house management team at the MEN, Showsec created a tailored crowd management plan for the series of gigs, to keep the 15,000 spectators safe. The crowd management plan incorporated 130 staff to cover all areas of the arena, including backstage, front of house and the pit.
Paul Joy commented: “When we realised there were 32 members of the Showsec Manchester team that would be working the Take That shows for the second time round, we couldn’t believe it, so to celebrate we organised a reunion dinner of all the original team members. Apart from the guys looking older, they still put on a fantastic show!”
