Turbosound Loudspeakers Withstand the Elements at Latvian Resort

It’s unusual for ski slopes to feature background music, but that’s precisely what has been done at a major ski resort in the Baltic state of Latvia. And Turbosound loudspeakers have not only provided top-notch audio quality, they’ve also been hardy enough to withstand the Latvian winter!

The Kalnadzisli ski resort is located 140km from the country’s capital Riga, one of a number of ski centres that are extremely popular with winter sports fans throughout the country. Featuring five slopes, a hotel and restaurant, Kalnadzisli is expanding and will eventually become an all-year-round facility.

A recent move towards that goal was the installation of a background music system on the ski slopes themselves, by Riga-based contractor GaCo Skanu un Gaismu Serviss SIA (GaCo).

“We wanted to achieve very even sound coverage on all the ski slopes,” says Normunds Eilands, GaCo managing director. “But we also we had to solve the issue of the very long cable runs to the speaker cabinets from the power amplifiers, which were located in the restaurant area.

“We felt the best solution was to use 100v line loudspeakers. Having made that decision, Turbosound then presented the perfect solution in the form of the TCS Compact series.”

To achieve the required coverage, GaCo deployed 16 TCS-121CWT loudspeakers, driven by two Turbosound-badged MC2 Audio T-Series power amplifiers with T-Lain transformer chassis.

Although the TCS Compact series is officially rated IP-54 for weather resistance, the TCS-121CWTs proved more than capable of withstanding the rigours of the harsh Latvian winter, thanks to Turbosound’s extremely high quality protection.

Featuring exterior-grade marine birch plywood, the TCS-121CWT cabinets are internally sealed with a moisture-resistant compound and externally sprayed with an extremely tough polyurethane coating, with the loudspeaker cones themselves sealed as well. Stainless steel grilles and fixings prevent any possibility of rust.

“The speakers provided great sound coverage and have withstood the winter very well,” says Normunds Eilands. “They were an excellent choice for a very inclement climate!”
