Lighthouse Shines at Ocean Blockbuster Launch
The Empire, Leicester Square was the location for the UK premiere of Poseidon - the ocean-based action blockbuster - on 28th May and it was entirely appropriate that Lighthouse screens were chosen to help beam promotional footage to those outside.
PSL Europe provided Lighthouse R16 16mm LED screens, which formed a giant entrance to the premiere, under which the celebrity guests walked. These included several of the film’s stars such as Kurt Russell, Josh Lucas and Emmy Rossum plus Goldie Hawn - Russell’s partner of 24 years.
Footage on the screens was used to set the scene for the guests and the hundreds of onlookers outside the venue, featuring promotional clips of the movie and suitably atmospheric footage of ocean waves.
With overall dimensions of 21m wide x 3m high, although physically two screens, they were treated as one for playback purposes, the only difference being that the content was specially edited for the size and format of each.
Control of the screens was by three Lighthouse LIP SX units, with three other HD units for scaling, a specific unit for picture in picture and an HDCam deck for HD playback.
The Empire is in an extremely busy part of London, so PSL project manager Pod Bluman and the six-man team had a very tight schedule in which to do the job. “We had a 5am get in on the 27th May and the screens had to be up by midday,” says Pod. “Then the morning following the premiere it was a 5am load out, which had to be finished by 7.30am.”
Fortunately, thanks to the Lighthouse screens’ robustness and reliability, the schedule was never in danger of over-running. “It is great screen!” notes Pod. “I was very happy with the performance and reliability of the modules and the client was very pleased with the installation.”
Simon Taylor Lighthouse’s Northern European sales manager adds: “The Poseidon launch again shows how LED screens are in demand for an ever-diversifying range of applications. Because of the high media profile of events like this, whatever the technical challenges, the fact is that nothing must be allowed to go wrong.
