New Vision for TV industry: Launch of TV Skills Strategy
Minister for Creative Industries and Tourism, Shaun Woodward MP, will launch a new strategy focusing on developing the talent and creativity of the TV industry and its workforce at Bafta on Tuesday 4th July 2006.
The broadcast industries contributed £6.2bn to the UK economy in 2003 – an increase from £3.5bn in 1997. However, despite a highly qualified workforce – 69% of media professionals are graduates compared to 16% of the UK workforce as a whole – there are significant skills gaps and shortages and due to a reliance on informal recruitment methods there are also challenges in ensuring a diverse workforce.
The TV Skills Strategy, developed by the industry through Skillset, tackles these problems covering all skills, education and business development needs of the industry. Priorities identified include developing a new creative and media diploma for 14-19 year olds; establishing Skillset Academies; an induction programme for junior staff; and an industry agreed formula for investing in freelancers.
