Pro Audio at JHS Event '06

Event 2006, the John Hornby Skewes & Co. Ltd trade-only music show held recently at the music equipment distribution company's head office site in Garforth, West Yorks, proved once again to be a success on the pro audio side. Both JHS Pro Audio specialist sales managers, Neville Raine and Stuart McKay were on site during Event’s four-day duration to discuss and offer advice, along with HK Audio's own team of Andreas Mayerl and Christian Stumpp.

With a variety of new HK Audio product ranges coming on stream and various upgrades of well-established existing systems, Event had plenty to offer new and existing pro audio customers. In fact, to set the scene, trade visitors to the show site were immediately greeted with the now regular but nonetheless dramatic sight of a fully-flown hang of Cohedra on a line array tower, matched by a tower hang of the new Cohedra Compact (CoCo) system. With its now well-established reputation as a superb performance concert sound line array system suitable for larger scale applications, Event '06 offered an ideal opportunity to assess the performance of the CoCo system directly alongside it. Already, Cohedra Compact's potential for the UK pro audio market has attracted a high level of interest, thanks to the even-more-compact HK Audio system's spec combination of being an easily portable concert sound system with an impressively wide application range.

The Event Cohedra rig consisted of four CDR208T and four CDR208S mid/hi cabinets, with eight CDR210S subwoofers, driven by a PR16 amp rack, featuring two DFC controllers and four VX2400 power amps. Alongside it, the CoCo hang utilised eight CDR108C mid/hi units and four CDR210C subs, powered by a PR8 amp rack holding a DFC digital field controller and two VX2400 power amps.

Also introduced as part of HK Audio's concert sound line-up was the new ConTour Array Series. Offering a stackable ‘halfway house’ between line array and traditional cab layouts, ConTour Array is a high performance system dedicated to professional near-field sound reinforcement, which at Event could be viewed and assessed alongside the line array hangs in the shape of a ConTour Array ground stack, consisting of two CTA208 mid/hi cabs plus two CTA118 subs.

Nearby, the JHS Pro Audio theatre featured a variety of new and established HK Audio portable sound and installation line systems. In fact, Event '06 also marked the UK launch of the latest active portable, self-powered L.U.C.A.S systems, in their compact and self-contained ‘subwoofer and two satellites’ arrangement. These systems have proved to be an extremely important and successful part of the HK catalogue since they were introduced some six years ago, and the new digital power versions include the flagship L.U.C.A.S Max, rated at 2,000 watts RMS: next, the 1,200 watt L.U.C.A.S Impact; then L.U.C.A.S Performer at 900 watts, with the diminutive L.U.C.A.S Smart weighing in with a punchy 400 watts rating.

Powerworks, Premium PR:O and the standard ConTour series were also represented in the demo theatre with one of each box, with a stack of two CT118 subs and CT115’s, powered by HK’s new CTPR3 rack holding HK’s VX2400 power amps with the new DSM2060 controller.

Additionally, the portable sound presentation was completed by the entire HK Audio Installation Line, now also a major part of its catalogue, with a comprehensive range of enclosures and accessories designed specifically to suit permanent installations, from a requirement for high quality background music all the way to high-power, multi-feed large venue systems.
