Visual Effects Company Advances into the Defence Market
2d3, a leading developer of Academy Award-winning special effects software and part of Oxford Metrics Group plc, has announced that it is displaying the defence applications of its ground breaking image understanding technology.
The 2d3 technology on display is in commercial use today, and is ready to be deployed to solve many of tomorrow’s aerial defence problems.
Showcasing its capabilities at the world-famous Farnborough Air Show, 2d3 – which has developed technology responsible for the visual effects in blockbusters such as The Matrix, Lord of the Rings, X Men, Pirates of the Caribbean and Superman Returns – has already signed deals with defence contractors including the likes of QinetiQ.
The move from movies to military defence may sound like a giant leap for 2d3 but its technologies, built entirely around image tracking, have many proven capabilities which will be invaluable in defence scenarios. From mapping 3D terrain and tracking targets, to 3D positioning, zooming in on video and picking out detail from super resolution, as well as mosaic-ing overlapping images to create 3D models, 2d3’s software provides solutions for solving many of the key challenges facing UAV imagery.
The company recently announced record interim results for the six months ended 31 March 2006 and its intention to diversify into new markets. Nick Bolton, OMG chief executive said: “OMG continues to lead through innovation. Since becoming chief executive of OMG in May 2005, I have implemented a number of initiatives focused on leveraging our existing technology and diversifying into new markets.
“The UAV market is set to be worth over $10 billion in the next 10 years. Current UAVs cost in the region of $250,000 to fit out with video equipment, yet the quality of the images captured is well below standard – on a par with cheap CCTV footage. Our expertise can bring a lot to this growing market,” Bolton concluded.
