First Paris Music and Sound Show

Created on the initiative of Reed Expositions France and the CSFI (Chambre Syndicale de la Facture Instrumentale, the French professional instrument-makers' organisation), the first Music and Sound Show will be held from 9 to 12 September 2006, at Paris Expo, Porte de Versailles. More than a simple trade show, this is claimed to be a unique event acclaimed and supported by the entire profession: the first edition will be sponsored by Manu Dibango, the multi-instrumentalist pioneer of Word Music.

Over 800 brands have signed on to present their new and flagship products to the 50,000 or so visitors expected. Presented in two sections, ‘Classic Music and Jazz’ and ‘Contemporary Music’, a vast array of instruments of all kinds, in all styles and for all tastes, will offer the public an extensive overview of the variety of musical instruments that can be played today.

For amateurs and professionals, practising traditional sight-reading or other learning methods, the schools, conservatories and teaching centres will also be present to answer questions from visitors.

Pride of place will be given to live music. Three stages will be set up to present over 100 concerts by talented artistes and musicians. In these special settings, visitors will be able to attend musical demonstrations, discover young groups and orchestras, and appreciate the performances of professional musicians. One stage will be reserved for Classical music and Jazz and the two others for Contemporary forms of Music.

Accessible to all, the ‘Make your own Music’ workshop will offer adults and children the opportunity to test the instrument of their choice among the five groups: brass, woodwind, guitars, strings and percussion. Activity leaders will explain to each group how to hold the instruments, obtain a good sound, and get the group to "play"' together. It will be an ideal opportunity for them to try to make music and check out all the styles to find the instrument that best suits them.

An innovative feature of The Music and Sound Show will be the ‘Coaching Days’. Rising singing talents who have already produced their first album and who possess an original repertoire will have the opportunity to demonstrate their range to professionals of the music sector (producers, record companies, voice coaches, gig organisers, agents, etc.). This unique experience, not easily accessible outside of the Show, will enable tomorrow's talents to obtain advice and guidance on how to pursue their career in the music world.

Meetings will be organised in a reserved section of the Show, after the registration and selection of the artistes on the show’s website.

A series of seminars will provide the opportunity for players in the world of music and those who aspire to be professionals to come together to look into current issues in the music sector, discuss trends, or examine problems facing the record industry. Each debate will be organised with contributions from professionals and institutional partners such as SACEM, UPFI, SNEP, SPEDIDAM and IRMA which actively support the Show.

Numerous round table debates will be organised on varied themes such as ‘young authors’, ‘scores and multimedia’, ‘orchestral practices in schools’, etc. One of the highlights will take place on Sunday 10 September at 3 pm, featuring a debate on the theme ‘Musical profession: which training for which project?’. Training professionals will talk about the many different types of learning that future performers can undertake to make their ideas become a reality.

Another highlight of the cycle of debates will be provided by Promusic France, which is organising with SNEP, UPFI, SACEM and IRMA on Monday 11 September at 3 pm a major conference called ‘In the Wings of Musical Creation’ to present the 1001 jobs of the music world that enable songs to find their audience, compositions to become CDs, and performers to appear on stage.

The Music and Sound Show is building up to be a huge event, for both the general public and the professionals of the sector… After the holidays, the big date is with Music!
