For the second year running, the technical team at De Montfort Hall turned to Hawthorn to assist in their sell-out Summer Sundae weekend festival. For the first time in its six-year history, the festival attracted over 16,500 visitors with over 100 artists/bands, 21 cabaret acts, 10 MC’s and two DJ’s and even a mini cinema.

Rated as one of the top 15 independent festivals in the UK, Summer Sundae is recognised for featuring breaking bands and in the past has featured such names as Keane, Kasabian, Editors, Be Good Tanya’s and Hot Chip. This year’s headliners included Elbow, Calexico, Gomez and Belle & Sebastian, plus No 1 selling artist James Morrison, Captain, Forward Russia!, Jamie T and Jose Gonzalez.

Jake Webb, De Montfort Hall’s technical manager commissioned Hawthorn to provide all the lighting and power distribution and technical back-up for the festival.

“We were delighted with Hawthorn last year, so it really was a ‘no brainer’ to turn to them again for this year’s event,” said Jake, “and as usual they were superb.”

To assist Jake at the festival he contracted freelance lighting designer, Andy Finn to control the lighting on the main stage and Terry Forryan who is an independent project manager, to take responsibility for site power and distribution.

“I wanted to produce a ‘light show’ that would cover from daylight hours through to the headliners and since the main stage’s opening act had that week’s number one album, it proved a good call,” said Andy.

“It was great to have the option of the vast array of equipment from Hawthorn as the stage design was irregular and included a 75-foot long inflatable figure that covered from backstage till the head rested atop the mid-stage truss. The Hawthorn designed shimmeers hung elegantly around the edge of the stage and looked as beautiful in bright daylight as they did in the headliners’ slower songs. The Hawthorn team were great to work with and they did me and the festival proud.”

“We had nine generators delivering 0.5 megawatts of power to all the facilities at the festival,24 hours a day,” said Terry, who has worked with the De Montford team on all six festivals. “Hawthorn were part of a great overall team effort and gave me excellent support and backup, even through the added complication of the damp weather.”
