Norwegian Parliament Networks with Soundweb

BSS Audio reports that while its Norwegian distributor, LydRommet, continues to establish the company’s reconfigurable Soundweb London processors as a cost-saving central switching solution in Norway’s cultural centres, the original Soundweb SW9088iis and SW3088 ‘green boxes’ remain enormously popular. And over a four-year period, the biggest customer for these has been the Norwegian Parliament.

LydRommet first specified Soundweb as the central processing device when they installed the sound system for the main Parliamentary building back in the summer of 2002. “We were tasked with providing signal distribution, both analogue and digital, to more than 120 destinations, using 9088’s with full redundancy,” reports the company’s Espen Andersen.

However, after several years of networking the expanding facility via SW9088iis DSP devices, the latest phase — the construction of the Committee and Public Hearings Building — has seen LydRommet call on the Soundweb London BLU-80. Situated in downtown Oslo, the new building comprises 13 committee rooms and three hearing rooms.

Each committee room is fitted with proprietary boundary mics (for documentary work and recordings), using the computer-controlled mic pre’s in the Soundweb Lite SW3088. The BSS Audio processor has a number of duties to perform — from volume control and signal source selection to providing a feed for IR assisted hearing.

As for the Soundweb London BLU-80’s, these have been deployed in the hearing rooms. Each is fitted with a pair of BLU-80’s, which function as a digital console — either automatically controlled by a CrestronŽ system or manually via custom control panels on the computer.

“Soundweb London was chosen because of its extended DSP power, design abilities and networking capability with the rest of the Parliament complex over CobraNet,” Andersen reports. He further anticipates that the entire complex of Parliament buildings will be converted to the digital domain, offering CobraNet distribution as the main networking platform.

For the record, the Norwegian Parliament is the largest single user of Soundweb devices in Norway, their inventory presently consisting of 12 x Soundweb Lite SW3088’s, eight Soundweb SW9088iis and seven Soundweb London BLU-80’s.
