Perception 400 from AKG

To keep up with developments at the ultra-affordable end of the microphone business, AKG released the Perception Series 100 and 200 condenser mics last year. Designed in Europe but made in the Far East, the 100 and 200 manage to be excellent value without sacrificing the design standards for which AKG are known.

Having made their name accessible to entry-level recordists, AKG are now keen to give even these cash-strapped beginners something to aspire to. And so they’re introducing the Perception 400 at this year’s PLASA, a new microphone which sits at the top of the Perception range, creating ‘good, better and best’ models for purchasers to choose from. Perception 400 is a large-diaphragm condenser microphone with multiple pickup patterns (cardioid, omnidirectional and figure-of-eight) designed for both live and studio-based applications. Like microphones costing much more, it features a switchable 10dB pad and bass-cut filter, will record frequencies ranging from 20Hz to 20kHz, and can withstand a maximum sound pressure level (SPL) of 145dB. It’s supplied in a metal-framed carry case, and a free shockmount and two-year parts-and-labour guarantee is included in the price.

Also new from AKG at the PLASA show are two sets of headphones for DJs. Designed to appeal to purchasers of equipment from Soundcraft’s DJ brand Urei, the AKG K181 and K81 are hard-wearing, high-performance closed-back DJ headphones. Thanks to AKG’s neat ‘3D Axis’ alloy-based folding design, they can be used in almost any listening position — for example on both ears, or with either ear on or off — or folded up completely for storage. Both models feature replaceable ear pads and an adjustable headband, and the top-of-the-range K181 has some extra features, such as a switchable bass boost, the ‘Sound Selector’, for gigs at large clubs. There’s also a stereo/mono selector switch not found on the K81, to make monitoring easier when using just one earphone. Finally, the straight cable on the K181 is detachable and replaceable by an optional coiled wire.
