Second Year of Success for Hawthorn at Canary Wharf Summer Galas

For the second year running the Canary Wharf Group turned to Hawthorn to assist with their spectacular Summer Gala events. With nine days of activities in July, held at Canada Square Park, with both lunchtime and evening performances, the gala attracted over 10,000 spectators over the two week period.
The varied programme included film screenings, a comedy night, an evening of dance, classical music recitals and featured performances from artists such as Osibisa and Geno Washington and The Ram Jam Band on the 20th, Weapons of Sound and Blue Man Group on the 21st, Humphrey Lyttleton and Acker Bilk and their respective bands on the 27th, culminating in a performance by the London Symphony Orchestra at the finale on the 28th.
Hawthorns were commissioned to provide entrance, stage and garden lighting. “This year’s event was an interesting project,” said Matt Oscroft, Hawthorn’s project manager. “With it being our second year working for this event, we realised we had to keep our designs and specifications fresh. This was achieved by using new configurations of Prolyte truss, which allowed us to use the maximum height of the Orbit structure. In addition, as the Clay Paky Alpha Spots were such a success last year, lighting designer Phil Smith opted to use them again, which proved invaluable as some of the events were during the day.”
A new challenge for Hawthorn this year was to erect the three entrance structures, which were completely constructed from Prolyte truss and were lit internally with Thomas Pixel Pars, enhancing the colour changing garden lighting.
“The lighting effect was spectacular” said David Norrie, production co-ordinator for the Canary Wharf Group. “Hawthorn delivered again.”
