Take That with grandMA

Precisely ten years after their break-up four of the original five band members toured the United Kingdom and Ireland during their ‘The Ultimate Tour 2006’ with great success. Success that is also based on a breathtaking show with ligthing designer Simon Tutchener. His instruments of choice were two grandMA full-size and four NSPs to control over 180 moving lights.

The set design by Bill Laslett was dominated by a 17 metre diameter halo. Tutchener used this construction to hang lighting fixtures on every available piece of metal. Tutchener said: “It’s the old Take That rig in terms of scale, updated with contemporary fixtures and a post-Millenium look.” Because of the schedule and volume of gear it was essential to have a lighting rig that could be focused remotely. Everything from trussing to fixtures was movable. Over the round B-stage, witch could be lifted above the main stage or put down on it, was another circular truss.

Besides numerous Martin moving lights, six Vari*Lite VL6s illuminated the inside lip of the halo. On the lip of the B-stage were eight Vari*Lite VL5As and some Par 36s. Different whites and a selection of classy monochrome tints dominated the lighting look. Tuchener, who also designed the latest Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris tour, explained, that this was to give the set a deliberate air of sophistication.
