TiMax and SoundTablet Assist Aer Lingus Cabin Crew Training

Out Board have recently supplied a fully integrated TiMax audio delay matrix and Soundtablet sound effects playback system for an Aer Lingus cabin crew flight training simulator sited at Dublin airport.
The trainer was built by RP Aero systems in the UK, whose technical director Michael Rutherford contacted TiMax developers Out Board after undertaking extensive research into multi-channel audio localisation and control. The TiMax digital matrix and PC software uses delay-based precedence psychoacoustics to accurately localise and pan audio effects across multiple zones in the simulated Airbus passenger cabin section.
TiMax SoundTablet uses ASIO streaming for multitrack sound effect playback which is routed by the TiMax IM8 (8-in, 8-out) to 20 loudspeakers built into the trainer fuselage. Soundscapes were programmed by Out Board’s Robin Whittaker for take-off and landing sequences as well as for in-flight events such as engine failure and decompression. The combination of Soundtablet’s waveform-based drag ‘n drop panning facility and the TiMax delay matrix allows each track of source material to be localised or spatialised as required to deliver the most realistic montage possible.
Multiple scenarios are programmed into SoundTablet and managed as multiple cues in the TiMax ShowControl PC’s Playlist. Certain sequential cues are run automatically against a TiMax internal Timeline, or triggered externally via RS232 by a custom show-control system configured and programmed by RP Aero.
Enda Byrne, head of training at Aer Lingus, comments that the cabin crew need to build up a sixth sense for when something is wrong and much of this is based on the sound in the cabin. The high degree of immersive realism created by the TiMax delay matrix helps to achieve this, along with the ability of the training officer to interact spontaneously with the system via the showcontrol system.
