Arctic art: grandMA controls 52,000 LEDs in World’s Biggest “Ice-Bar”
“Cool” is the right word. Three-thousand-five-hundred blocks of ice with an overall weight of 320 tons were used for the world’s largest Ice-Bar (300 square metres) in Schüttorf, Germany. The discotheque ‘Index’ offers its visitors a frosty world of light and ice. Nearly everything from furniture to walls is made of ice. To give the bar another very special touch there are about 52,000 LEDs or rather 160 LED PAR-Spotlights implemented into the building with control via a grandMA onPC and an NSP. The Index also utilises two grandMA full-size and a grandMA light and a grandMA video is integrated into the network.
“The grandMA consoles are easy to handle and immediately ready for action. Furthermore they’re very versatile; they control everything but mainly multimedia devices like the server and LEDs. We use grandMA technology also because of its reliability and quality workmanship,” explains Sven Janning of F.A.C.E., the main company that provided project support.
Lighting the ice will deliver effects in Schüttorf which have never been seen before. For this reason the developers put their main focus into the lighting. LEDs were assembled because of their low heat radiation so guests could enjoy their arctic cocktail in a constant –7 degree environment, where you can find amazing things like a motorcycle completely embedded in ice.
The Index is one of the top ten discos in Germany.
