Essential for Proms in the Park

The lighting for this year’s Proms in the Park, at Hyde Park, was once again designed by Essential Lighting’s Tony Hall. The stunning set, designed by Hattie Spice, was created to reflect the classic Tiffany lamp, and the structural spines were trussing, with a painted cloth between each spine. Rigging for this year’s event was installed by Outback, and the installation of all the overhead elements involved a time consuming build, with the “lamp shade” inching its way out slowly, as the lighting was installed on each spine.
Tony insisted on all the lamps being centrally rigged on each truss spine, and so each unit was rigged onto a scaff bar to get the correct orientation. The lamp shade had nine “spines”, and a total lamp count of 27 Martin MAC 250 profile units, 36 Studio Beam PC units, and 81 Pulsar Chromacans for the spines, with the central circle containing 11 Vari*Lite 3000 profiles, eight Martin MAC 2000 wash lights, and nine Golden Scan 3 TV units.
The rear of stage risers included a further nine Martin MAC 2000 wash lights and 14 Martin MAC 2000 profiles for set dressing and camera effects. Front of house was kept deliberately simple, utilising 20 X 6 lamp bars for the orchestra wash, and specials as required. For follow spots, Tony installed 4 X 3Kw Gladiators from the 2 spot towers FOH.
The arena lighting is always a huge undertaking, since the camera shots need to cover right to the back of the 45,000 audience. Sixty-eight Molefay 8-lites were rigged throughout the arena area to get the required coverage.
Control of the system was by an MA Lighting grandMA, a recent addition to Essential’s Stock. Martin Seymour programmed the moving lights, James Tomlinson was crew chief and Barry Tofield production electrician. Additional assistance was provided by Mathew Ilott, Graham Loughman, Steve Cameron, Roger Deane, Simon Clench, Matt Clutterham, Alan Boyd, Jason Finnis and Michael “Sandy” Simms.
