Harman are Hip at The Square

Harman Pro UK have supplied Harlow’s long-established live music venue, The Square, with a new Soundcraft MH2 front-of-house console. For nearly 30 years, The Square has been renowned for its reputation on the ‘up-and-coming’ circuit — many British bands who have played here in the past have subsequently gone on to great things, such as Blur, Coldplay and Muse.

Earlier this year, The Square asked Harlow lighting and sound installation company Clarity in Sound Light and Vision to get a quote for the repair of their ageing front-of-house desk, which had been in use for about ten years. When Clarity’s Stuart Graham saw the size of the estimates for the repair work, he suggested a different plan. “I thought, ‘You can almost get a Soundcraft MH2 for that!’ And it was a better idea than getting the old one repaired at great expense, only to have it go wrong again a short while later.”

The Square’s Steve Harcourt adds: “It wasn’t just the cost of the repair - it was estimated that repairing our old desk could have taken up to six weeks. We’d have had to hire in a desk for that time, at further expense. A new desk seemed to make most sense.”

Stuart at Clarity contacted Harman Pro UK’s Gary Dent, who came down to The Square with a 24-channel MH2, and ran through the features with Steve and The Square’s sound engineers. They liked what they saw and heard, and the MH2 offered them more flexibility than their old desk. Gary Dent: “The Square were very keen to get more into running on-stage monitor mixes, and their old desk just didn’t have enough aux busses to do the job comfortably. But with the MH2, it was easy — there are 10 auxes altogether.” Steve Harcourt adds: “We have a spare pair of auxes for in-ear monitor mixes now — the old desk only had eight.”

Gary arranged to loan the desk to the venue for a few weeks, and the sale was soon agreed. “I was impressed by the build quality of the desk,” says Steve Harcourt, “and it’s worked really well since we installed it.”

“We’re always delighted to help out local live music venues,” comments Gary Dent, “and The Square at Harlow is one of the great proving grounds for young British talent.”
