Middlesex Close the Circle
Under the ownership of Finbar Holihan, who has a number of other pub interests, the 500-capacity Claddagh Ring in Hendon has converted from a standard Irish pub to an upmarket chameleon venue, with two stages, inventive use of LED washes to change the mood, a giant 3 x 3 42in plasma matrix — and a stylish architectural sound reinforcement solution provided by Martin Audio’s AQ range.
Conforming to an inventive design by Finton McDonnell of FM Design, the loudspeakers needed to fit the aesthetic and in a world of walnut and oak the recessed enclosures have been provided for part of the stage system, which comprises a pair of AQ15 two-way systems and pair of AQ215 vented 2 x 15in sub bass.
Project managed by Lance Bromhead of Middlesex Sound & Lighting — long-time advocates of the Martin Audio sound — the venue has been divided into ten zones, all individually controlled by three BSS Soundwebs (and Jellyfish remotes). But it is the clever deployment of the AQ series (finished in black) which brings this venue to life, and Finbar is ecstatic.
Aside from the main stage — which features a pair of Martin Audio Blackline F12 floor monitors — further AQ12’s and AQ10’s are distributed evenly throughout the venue.
Switched and routed by Soundweb, the PA takes signal source feeds from the two stages, a fixed DJ point with Denon twin CD players, audio from the satellite channels and hard disk running the background music during the day (when it operates as a sports bar). After dark, the venue switches mode seamlessly, and a partition separates the two stage areas — effectively creating two distinct venues.
Said Finbar Holihan: “After being here for 14 years with typical Irish bric-a-brac this place had run its course so we allocated £2 million to put this together. It had to be seen as a long-term investment and draws a very mature clientele.”
He said the sound was particularly impressive but they had no doubts after Middlesex Sound & Lighting had invited Claddagh Ring’s resident DJ Terry Domilan for a demo in Martin Audio’s impressive facility.
Middlesex Sound & Lighting have maintained the high specification throughout the venue, and have supplied pan and tilt cameras for use with the performing bands. The various plasma displays are switched using the BSS 9016 8 x 4 video switcher, while the Pulsar Chroma series mood LED lighting is environmentally controlled by Mode EVO series packs and the impressive automated production lighting from a Martin Light Jockey.
