RML for Blue Peter
The children’s show Blue Peter has been around since 1958, when it started as a small 15-minute show as part of the ‘Children’s Hour’ on the BBC. Since then the show is still going strong with each show increased to 25 minutes duration.
Blue Peter has a variety of lighting designers working on the show and in this particular production lighting designer Lee Allen, has been privileged with the task of keeping the children entertained. He asked rental company Richard Martin Lighting to help out and in return RML were able to get a few words on why Lee chose the lights he did. The fixtures for the show included six Chroma Banks, three Chroma Flood 200s and five ‘8’ Lights.
The Chroma Floods were “placed in three portals under the set in the home area”. The Chroma Floods were a change in the rig used in the last series, which involved Par cans. “We used the Chroma Flood 200s instead as they provide colour mixing, are small and create no heat,” explained Lee Allen.
“We used six Chroma Banks in one particular show to add some extra to a 140-piece children’s choir and band,” said Lee. “The Chroma Banks were the most accessible to light such a large performance with no time to programme or smoke for beam work.”
For the rest of the set Lee chose ‘8’ Lights. “The 8-Lights are great lights that we use to sit at the top of the frame and add interest,” he concluded.
