Leisuretec’s Theatre Working Lights Revolution
Dormston School Theatre in Sedgely has replaced all of their working lights after being “blown away” by the unique GDS Blues System, distributed by Leisuretec Distribution.
BlueBeams in 5 and 10 degrees and BlueDomes have replaced all working blue lights in and around the backstage area, the fly level and front-of-house cross-over gantry position. All existing fittings in the technical areas have been replaced – an unusual move for a theatre built just three-and-half-years ago.
“They asked us to provide a demonstration and were blown away when they saw the products in situ,” explained Leisuretec’s Andy Duffield. “We assessed the best products and fittings for the different areas and depending on throw elected either 5 or 10 degree BlueBeams. For the quick change areas stage left and right we chose BlueDomes with eyelids.” The install was carried out by Chapmans Electrical.
The theatre also replaced the fly rail illumination system. “Lighting is important when you are moving heavy scenery; you have to be able to see rope markers but don’t want illumination to spill onto stage,” continued Duffield. “The solution was to install a run of BlueDomes in white with eyelids, masking light spill and focusing the light where required. We used whites rather than blues as in this particular area colour rendering was vital for the markers.”
The Blues System is continuing to gain mass interest in the theatre world, with products recently being installed in London’s National Theatre.
