Magic of Merlin with Stage One

Stage One brought the magic of Merlin to life recently when the company was once again chosen to build the set for the Christmas show at Huddersfield’s Lawrence Batley Theatre, entitled ‘Merlin and the Enchanted Mirror’.

The Kate Morton designed set was double-sided with both sides depicting castle stonework and consisting of a series of arches, steps, a central tower and on one side, an upper level. A timber and steel frame formed the structure with the texturing and stonework effect achieved by applying carved polystyrene. This was then scrimmed and painted. The floor of the exterior castle scene was spatter painted in an earthy effect whilst the interior floor was tiled.

“Attention to detail to achieve truly realistic effects are important for a set such as this,” said Steve Tyler, project manager, Stage One. He continued: ”However, we have extremely talented people on board which ensures that this is easily achieved.”

The whole set turned 180º on a seven metre diameter revolve, which was also supplied by Stage One and the floor level of the stage was raised by 200mm to ensure a level performance area. Masking flats to a height of seven metres either side of the main castle set were also provided by Stage One. The top

section consisted of ‘flown’ scenically painted trees and the lower section was painted with a crumbling stonework effect.

Stage One also built several of the props for the show, including: a trucking rostrum with trapdoor, a cauldron, a magic stove and some scenic rocks.
