Multisound uses K.M.E. Pano in Hangar 2 at Berlin-Tempelhof Airport

One of the biggest solar module producers in Europe and operator of the world’s most powerful solar plant celebrated its 10th company anniversary on the 1st of December in Berlin. Multisound Breidert & Steinfels GbR of Erzhausen, Germany was engaged with the technical planning and implementation of sound reinforcement, lighting, video, stage and rigging. The Hangar2 at Berlin Tempelhof has a completely cantilevered main hall of about 5000sqm (55m wide, 98m long and 21m high) and an additional gallery (660sqm) provided an appropriate location for the 3000 invited guests. Claus Breidert and Martin Steinfels of Multisound set up the main sound reinforcement of this huge industry event with K.M.E. Pano line array systems.

As the main stage was on the long side of the Hangar a separate PA for the side area was necessary. The total system included K.M.E. Pano units as follows: 22 QL 906 + 2 QL 1215 as downfill at the front and at the side 10 QL 906 + 2 QL 1215 also as downfill.

The software also provided statistical data (e.g. dimensions, weight, angeling) so that the rigging points at the high-load truss could be calculated. On site the truss was equipped with BDV D8+ chain hoists where the top bars TB 906 with the array elements were mounted according to pre-planning. The whole system was lifted up and adjusted. During the adjustment the measurement system Smaart Live helped in optimizing the segue between side and main PA. The measurements confirmed the data in respect of SPL and homogeneity calculated through the simulation. Due to the optimized configuration, acoustical problems (resonances/reflections) were reduced to a minimum. The complete rig was flown, as the organisers required an invisible supporting construction. The bass reproduction was realised through an array of 22 K.M.E Pano QLB 118 arranged below the semi-circular stage. An adapted controller preset together with the configuration resulted in a directed dispersion. Also the measurement system was used for optimization here.

The event started at night with Joe Whitney & ‘The Streetlife Family’ who also performed as VIP band at the Nokia Night of the Proms. The Helmnot theater from Lichtenstein/Saxony inspired with a virtual trip around the world especially developed for the hosting company and its business sections. Special guests of the night and an anniversary surprise as well were The Temptations Review, with Damon Harris performing well-known hits like ‘Papa was a Rolling Stone’ or ‘My Girl’ and The Supremes.

Multisound appointed 14 technicians and six crew for the event. Said Martin Steinfels, one of the two associates on the project: “It was a big challenge for us not adapt the adjustment of the stage useful on the local conditions regarding flying points, escape routes e.g. but also to try to realize the concept of a room designer. That meant the main stage should be positioned between the two main emergency escape routes. Therefore the former reinforcement concept that intended a playing along the hall had to be revised completely. The cooperation with K.M.E. was excellent. They promptly delivered a new simulation and could also provide data for positioning and dimensioning of the pre-rig in the pre-planning phase. Another problem of playing across the hall was: were do we set up the monitoring so as not to bar the escape route or how do we create side stage areas for the scenery required by the Helmnot theater which would also block the escape routes? Therefore some 6 x 2 m huge roll risers were used, so that the 7m high and 400kg scenic elements for the theater could be moved to the stage from both sides.”

Lighting for the event included Martin Professional, ARRI and ETC luminaries controlled by a grandMA.
