Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama Celebrates Strategic Alliance with University of Glamorgan
As the result of a successful bid to form a strategic alliance with the University of Glamorgan, The Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama has succeeded in winning almost £13m in funding from the Welsh Assembly Government. The cash windfall, which has been agreed over three years (2006-2009) will be used to create new facilities and performance spaces. Plans include a 350-seat concert hall, two theatres, four drama rehearsal spaces, a suite of theatre design studios and additional teaching spaces.
RWCMD principal, Edmond Fivet, said: “Joining forces with the University of Glamorgan secures the College’s future, providing opportunities for its sustainable development and strengthening its status as the National Conservatoire of Wales.” The alliance will enable the College to reduce its overheads by accessing many of the administrative advantages offered by a large, diverse institution.
In welcoming the Strategic Alliance, Professor Sir Roger Williams, Chair of the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales, stated: “It is essential for Wales's cultural, educational and social development that it has a vibrant and successful National Conservatoire that can more than match its competitors in the UK. This Strategic Alliance between the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and the University of Glamorgan will help ensure the future success of the Conservatoire by enabling it to develop its facilities substantially further than would otherwise be possible. “
