Stage Technologies at Royal Festival Hall and Leicester Performing Arts Centre

The refurbishment of the 1950s Royal Festival Hall and the construction of the new Leicester Performing Arts Centre are now well underway. Stage Technologies are supplying complete automated power flying systems to both of these large iconic venues.
Standing proudly on the bank of the River Thames, the prestigious Royal Festival Hall is currently undergoing an estimated £91 million refurbishment that will completely transform the front of house and backstage areas. This major renovation began in summer 2005 and the venue is due to re-open to the public this summer.
The technical installation is a hugely complex project that includes a completely new roof truss system with approximately 20 tonnes of steel work and 10 tonnes of winch units. The new Stage Technologies' power flying system also requires a bespoke system that enables winches to track up and down stage, raising and lowering the huge lighting bridges and loudspeaker bars at different locations along the stage.
The new Leicester Performing Arts Centre is also beginning to taking shape. In an impressive bid to deliver inclusive and accessible theatre, the new Leicester Performing Arts Centre will reveal its stage and backstage areas to the street outside. The new venue, under construction in the heart of Leicester City, is part of the overall plan to revitalise and regenerate the city centre and will become a symbolic land mark for cultural industries in the East Midlands. The innovative, glass building will allow people to see inside the building from the outside including backstage activities such as sets being built. The centre will include two auditoria, totaling 1,000 seats, and will be fitted with the latest theatre technologies, including Stage Technologies’ Nomad control system and BigTow winches.
The stunning new building, designed by Rafael Viñoly Architects, will replace the Leicester Hay market Theatre, built in the 1970s, and is due to open in spring 2008.
