White Light Congratulates Olivier Award Nominees

The nominees for this year’s Laurence Olivier Awards, presented by the Society of London Theatres, were announced late last week. White Light would like to congratulate lighting designers Neil Austin, Natasha Chivers & Mike Robertson, Jean Kalman, Kenneth Posner and Hugh Vanstone, along with the nominees in all of the other categories.

The lighting nominations were for The Crucible, lit by Jean Kalman at the Gielgud, Monty Python’s Spamalot, lit by Hugh Vanstone at the Palace, Sunday in the Park with George, lit by Natasha Chivers and Mike Robertson at the Wyndhams, Therese Raquin lit by Neil Austin at the National Theatre’s Lyttelton, and Wicked, lit by Kenneth Posner at the Apollo Victoria. Austin, Chivers, Robertson and Posner are first-time nominees for the award, won last year by Paule Constable for Don Carlos.

The spread of shows which received nominations across all of the categories reflects the enormous range and quantity of shows produced in London’s West End during 2006, other nominees including the plays Blackbird, the Seafarer, Frost/Nixon and Rock ’n Roll, the musicals Avenue Q, Cabaret, Evita, Porgy and Bess and The Sound of Music. The Best Set Design nominations all went to musicals (Tim Hatley for Spamalot, David Farley and Timothy Bird for Sunday in the Park with George and Eugene Lee for Wicked, with the Best Costume Design nominations going to Tim Hatley for Spamalot, Alison Chitty for The Voysey Inheritance and Susan Hilferty for Wicked. Sound design continues to be recognised by the Oliviers, with Mic Pool (The 39 Steps), Ian Dickinson (Rock ’n Roll) and Gareth Fry (Waves) the nominees.

Presented annually by the Society of London Theatres, the Laurence Olivier Awards are awarded to shows opening in London’s West End between January 1st and December 31st each year. Shows are nominated by a postal ballot of all of the members of the Society; shows are then judged by panels made up of theatre experts and members of the theatregoing public.

The 2007 Olivier Awards will be presented at the Grovesnor House Hotel on Sunday 18th February. Further information about the awards, including a full list of nominees, can be found at the Society of London Theatres website, http://www.officiallondontheatre.co.uk.
