Wigwam and the Charlie Jones Memorial Scholarship
When Charlie Jones, a highly respected member of the Wigwam Acoustics team unexpectedly passed away, Wigwam’s Chris Hill and Jones’s sister Helen wanted Charlie to have a lasting legacy within the industry. “Charlie was passionate about giving youngsters joining our industry the right practical skills,” explained Hill, “and that’s what we’ve established at the School of Sound Recording (SSR) in Manchester.”
SSR, a leading contributor to the steady flow of new audio engineers into the world of professional audio, was like Wigwam, well aware of a lack of practical industry readiness in new entrants. “With SSR’s support and guidance we have set up a training facility to give students exactly that; hard, practical experience,” said Hill.
Put simply, SSR provides a 2,000 sq. ft teaching space, course infrastructure, and the tools of delivery; while Hill, using his extensive industry contacts has managed to secure support from a multitude of leading equipment manufacturers. “Through their generosity we have been able to install every piece of equipment a sound engineer could reasonably expect to find on a touring production,” he said. “Everything from staging and rigging to radio mics and mixing desks.”
Hill’s standing in the industry also enabled him to persuade such industry icons as John Del Nero, Rick Clark and Rupert Neve, to name only a few, to give regular ‘master class’ sessions at SSR.
Hill, and Jones’ sister Helen, will each be sponsoring a scholarship at SSR, with the school providing a third place as a mark of its own commitment to the course. The first intake of students for the Audio Engineering course will be in March, and applicants should approach SSR directly for information on securing a scholarship place.
“All of this allows us to broaden the students’ perceptions of what it’s like to work in ‘real world’ pro audio,” continued Hill. “It benefits the students and it benefits the wider industry. I believe it’s a potent legacy that Charlie could be proud of.”
