XL Video First in Europe with Thomson LDK 8000 HD Cameras

XL Video has strengthened its HD capabilities with a massive investment in Grass Valley LDK 8000 HD Cameras from Thomson. XL Video took delivery of five of the first LDK 8000s in Europe, completing an order that was among the very first taken for the new units, launched at IBC2006 in September.

“We have clients demanding excellent HD facilities, so this was not an investment we could delay,” said Malcolm Whittall, director and project manager at XL Video. “We needed a camera that produces excellent pictures, as well as a unit that our team of regular freelance engineers and operators were instantly comfortable with. As our projects tour around the world, we also needed to have good backup on a global level.”

Whittall adds that coming from a broadcast background, and having an excellent relationship with the Grass Valley camera group, he prefers the LDK 8000 picture to the competition, adding that it also has many other suitable features, so the decision was not difficult.”

Marc Valentin, president of the Grass Valley business within Thomson, says: “High definition is rapidly becoming the standard for video, whether in conventional broadcast applications or in new markets like staging, music and corporate events. This order from XL is very important to us - it demonstrates the industry’s faith in our ability to deliver an exciting new product, and underlines the importance of these ‘other’ markets to us. Audiences at product launches, large-scale meetings and particularly at large concerts, shows and events now recognise and demand high definition video.”

Increasingly, the demand from XL Video clients is for a true HD path, all the way from camera through the PPU and show control to the projectors and display surfaces. Needing only the cameras to complete the chain, XL Video evaluated the options and decided to invest in the new LDK 8000s. This allows their productions to produce fully in HD, from camera to screen – claimed to be aa UK first.

The LDK 8000 is the next generation of HD camera systems from Grass Valley. Launched at IBC2006, it builds on the success of its predecessor, the highly popular LDK 6000 – of which there are over 1500 cameras in use worldwide. The new LDK 8000 offers sparkling HD performance and the proven HD DPM+ CCD optical system coupled with 14 bit analogue-to-digital sampling and 24 bit digital signal processing within the camera.
