Dramatic Acclaim in Scotland for the Soundcraft Vi4

Eden Court Theatre, Inverness, is set to become the biggest multi-arts centre north of the border thanks to a major refurbishment and expansion project. Tasked with the challenge of bringing the vintage main 850-seater auditorium up to 21st-century standards, chief technician Graham Watts chose the Soundcraft Vi4 as his digital live sound console of choice.

Graham was able to see the Vi4 in action at a digital console demonstration at The Corn Exchange in Cambridge arranged by Harman Pro UK. Graham says, “My main reason for picking that sound console was sound quality. The very high quality of sound surpassed my expectations. I didn’t think a digital console could sound as good as that.”

The Soundcraft Vi4 will take centre stage in the recently refurbished EC1 auditorium coupled with four Opus Audio high definition amplifiers and five Opus Audio PSD 800T speakers. The horseshoe-shaped venue and listed building will play host to everything from Scottish opera and pantomimes to the stand-up comedy of Lenny Henry.

Graham Watts also chose the Soundcraft Vi4 for its “fast logical interface. In theatre use, that’s very important due to the time constraints that we work in. You can quickly get to it with no digital knowledge of a console at all and within 20 minutes, you’re in business. Another great feature is the use of colour for different functions because this gives a very quick status overview which speeds up operation considerably. I would imagine other console manufacturers trying to follow suit.”

Harman Pro UK were on hand for support and advice as Graham made full use of the Vi4’s new Processing Card options and assignable Lexicon effects. Graham explains, ”Built into the console you’ve got Lexicon reverbs, BSS graphic equalisers and Studer compressors and gates — again, a very high selling point. What’s interesting as well is we’ve bought an Apple Mac Pro computer and RME MADI card and interfaced it into the Soundcraft Vi4. We’re using Apple Logic Express so we’ve got a hard disk recorder running in sync with the Soundcraft Vi4.” Now Eden Court Theatre can record everything happening on stage and even burn DVDs of theatre performances. The curtain goes up on the new-look Eden Court Theatre on November 3rd, 2007.
