ETC Lighting Control Desks Fly in Edinburgh

ETC dealer Northern Light has hired out lighting and controls – including one of ETC’s newest lighting desks, the SmartFade ML – for the hugely popular Gilded Balloon at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

One of the most successful comedy and entertainment venues at the Fringe, The Gilded Balloon was established in 1986 and now operates eight spaces at what is, in real life, Edinburgh University’s student union building.

In addition to the SmartFade MLs, Northern Light project manager Calder Sibbald also supplied two ETC Congo jr lighting control desks and five SmartFade desks, as well as various ETC Source Four luminaires. The SmartFade ML console is a portable system that provides professional features like palettes, parameter fan and built-in dynamic effects with an easy-to-learn direct-access style of operation. With a capacity for up to 24 moving lights and an additional 48 intensity channels (dimmers), and the ability to patch to two complete universes of DMX512A (1,024 outputs), SmartFade ML is an ideal portable control for smaller-scale festival-venue rigs.

Calder says: “I recommended the Gilded Balloon take ETC equipment for the festival because of the quality of the equipment, as well as the superb after-sales service provided by the company, especially by their associate regional manager for UK & Ireland, Jeremy Roberts.”

ETC also took the opportunity, while so many technicians were together in one place at Assembly Universal Arts, to hold demos and training sessions on Congo and Congo jr. The space was kindly given over to ETC for the demo sessions by Tomek Borkowy, founder and artistic director of Universal Arts, who used Congo for many of the shows he was involved with. A great response was received. Technicians working at the festival got hands-on experience with the desks and more in-depth information from David Gray – a former board member of Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society and currently ETC's associate regional manager for the southern region.

Edinburgh was also the home of the Fettes Jazz Festival in August. For this, Northern Light supplied an ETC SmartFade ML, as well as plus 24 Source Four PARs and 12 Source Four PARnels. The Fettes Jazz Festival boasts 12 jazz performances over three days in a specially constructed 200-seat marquee. Despite being set in 75 acres of grounds, the festival is still just one mile from the city centre. Jay Buckingham, business development manager at Fettes Enterprises, thanked Calder and his Northern Light team for their commitment and professionalism. In a letter, he wrote: “The light displays surrounding the college, the marquee and the wooded areas looked absolutely breathtaking. I have had a high number of compliments regarding the light displays from corporate clients, events managers and the general public for which full credit must be taken by you and your team.”
