Stagesafe Marks 10th Birthday with Website Launch
Pioneering event health and safety consultancy Stagesafe celebrates its 10th anniversary this month with the launch of a new website.
The company was formed in 1997 by event safety specialist Chris Hannam, after many years of production roles including that of main stage production manager at Glastonbury Festival. Since then, reflecting Chris’s early recognition that legislation would play an increasingly important role in concert and event management, the regulatory landscape has been transformed for the entire industry.
Stagesafe’s role is to help promoters, production managers and production companies implement the ever-more complex web of health and safety requirements, such last year’s Regulatory (Fire Safety) Reform Act, the Control of Noise at Work Regulations and the soon-to-be-re-written Event Safety Guide. The company also provides training under the Safety Passport Scheme, nationally accredited by the Safety Pass Alliance.
A series of landmark pieces of legislation began to appear from 1992 onwards as European directives were introduced to ‘get the whole of Europe singing from the same sheet’ and give force to the Health & Safety at Work Act.
New regulations, based on European Union Directives, included the Manual Handling Regulations, the Display Screen Equipment Regulations, the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations: “That was the key one,” notes Hannam, “because it formalised the role of risk assessments and safety policies, which nowadays everybody’s got to have.”
Stagesafe’s new website provides a mine of useful information, including a basic guide to health and safety responsibilities, risk assessments, health and safety law and the duties of both employers and the self-employed.
There are dedicated pages aimed at promoters, event organisers and production companies, information about the Safety Passport scheme, and a Resource Centre with information on self employment, taxation, insurance, health and safety law, RF management and much more.
The site is completed by an extensive safety news area with an optional RSS newsfeed and, on a lighter note, an entertaining ‘fun stuff’ section with some highly entertaining quotes and audio clips.
Chris Hannam comments: “The majority of professionals in our industry today recognise the need to work within the framework of all these new regulations, because they contribute to providing a safer environment for crews, artists and audiences. Our aim is to assist companies and individuals in implementing all those things efficiently and painlessly.”
Chris Hannam’s book, Health and Safety Management in the Live Music and Events Industry is published by Entertainment Technology Press Ltd. Go to http://www.etbooks.co.uk for details and to order.
