ABTT Announce Nicholas van Wijk Bursary Awards

The Association of British Theatre Technicians and Theatre Techniques has announced that the recipient of the Nicholas F Van Wijk Bursary have been awarded to Louis Havell, from London and Glenn Oxenbury from Leigh-on-sea. Seven applicants were short-listed. Louise and Glenn have now started their ABTT Bronze Award training and should complete by end of November 2007.

These bursaries are the kind gift of Heather, widow of Nick van Wijk. Nick spent nearly all his working life in West End Theatre. He was Master Carpenter at the Aldwych Theatre in London from 1994 until his death in October 2003. Nick (pictured) always laid great store in passing on his stage technical knowledge to the next generation – usually accompanied by amusing theatrical reminiscences.

Tony Bond, training consultant for Theatre Techniques and who helped judge the bursary, said: “I just wanted to thank Heather for the opportunity you are giving to these technicians and I am sure Nick would be very proud it is a very generous gesture.”

Bronze courses receive full accreditation from Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama and with the introduction of Silver and Gold modules make the ABTT Awards the most prestigious vocational courses for theatre practitioners.

These courses are a huge benefit to technicians both for personal career development and for those who simply wish to bring themselves up to speed with a particular subject.

Each participant is provided with a Log Book, comprehensive tutor notes and appropriate ABTT Code of Practice. In addition, candidates will receive an accredited Certificated on the successful completion of their award. ABTT Training is open to affiliated and full members of the Association. If you have not yet joined and would like to take part look on the ABTT web site www.abtt.org.uk for membership details.
