PSL Presents History of Video Games at Academy Awards

For the second consecutive year, West Design commissioned PSL to provide technical services for the British Academy Video Games Awards gala dinner in London. It’s one of the most challenging fixtures in the PSL calendar, providing the visual environment for an industry gathering of professionals who specialise in providing visual entertainment.
Staged at the Battersea Evolution, the BAVGA celebrates creative and technical excellence in the video environment. Working under the direction of the event’s concept and production designer Lucy Smail of West Design & Production, PSL set new technological standards, stretching a single high-definition screen more than 40 metres across the width of the venue.
Effectively creating a screen within a screen within a screen, the central display area carried the names and images of award nominees and winners. The main creative concept, displayed across the whole width of the massive widescreen, traced the evolution of the video game, using a moving storyboard that took the audience from early line drawings and sketches all the way up to date and 2007’s award-winning game play. Content created by Digital Insanity was fed through a high-definition Hippotizer server, and delivered by PSL’s new Christie 20K projectors.
The big screen was used to divide the main awards dinner from the reception and party area, where a second, rear-projection system maximised the use of the screen. “When guests arrived, they faced a giant wall of projection telling the story of the video game,” explains concept designer Lucy Smail. “In the party area, they were on the other side of that big screen; with VJ input feeding into the projection, the atmosphere was more frenetic. I wanted them to feel surrounded by the game.”
PSL project manager Pod Bluman and his team worked to extremely tight deadlines, with just 12 hours from get-in to doors. “We had to be very very quick; we only had a 24 hour slot at the venue,” explains Lucy Smail. “We achieved an enormous amount in a very short time.”
