TESS Co-ordinates Highest Safety Standards at St Pancras Launch

The Event Safety Shop (TESS) has established itself as a market leader in events safety consultancy and was appointed to co-ordinate the health and safety systems in place for the high profile launch, attended by the Queen and the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown.

As St Pancras was still classified an active construction site, with several different building contractors working on various parts of the station, a key part of the challenge for TESS was to ensure that events professionals adhered to standards demanded by the construction industry, namely the CDM regulations.

Produced by Flux Events for London & Continental Railways (LCR) under the technical direction of John Farquhar-Smith, the event’s executive producer was Jon Teeman, with the renowned set designer Mark Fisher providing creative direction.

“St Pancras is a beautiful building but it raised many safety issues,” says TESS director Tim Roberts. “The 25,000 volt overhead cables for the trains imposed tight and absolute time restrictions as they had to be switched off to allow teams to work. The station is also Grade I listed so we had to protect the fabric of the building as well as ensure that the safety of contractors was paramount.”

As the event production crossed many different parts of the station TESS had to liaise with safety officers of all the construction teams as well as several different railway companies and the station management.

“In any railway contract, safety is the number one priority,” says Tim. “We had to demonstrate to professionals in other industries that event contractors work to stringent safety codes. We surprised our colleagues in other sectors with our professionalism and proved that events contractors work well under the safety standards demanded by such strictly regulated industries as construction and the railways.”
