Electro-Voice Holiday on Ice in Nottingham

Britain’s cities continue their love affair with town-centre ice rinks built especially for the Christmas and New Year holiday season. The city of Nottingham has opened its first, the E.ON Ice Rink, in the Old Market Square, complete with a multi-zone Electro-Voice sound reinforcement system supplied by Shuttlesound.
Even the launch party was an all-EV affair. With Jayne Torvill and the local mayor on hand to mark the grand opening of the rink and the switch-on of the Christmas lights in the city centre, Nottingham-based event production company OneBigStar brought in an Electro-Voice XLC ground-stack system, powered with EV’s Tour Grade amps, to supplement the installed system on the big occasion.
The 40m x 19m E.ON Ice Rink stays in place from late November to mid-January. OneBigStar, working closely with the National Ice Centre in Nottingham, has supplied light, power and fixtures, and an all-EV PA system that will carry music and entertainment supplied by local radio station Trent FM.
According to Simon Taylor of OneBigStar: “IP ratings in an uncovered ice rink are a major consideration, for obvious reasons! Many IP-rated and outdoor loudspeakers tend to be particularly lacking in bottom end, which is why we opted for the Electro-Voice ZX5 15” 2-way cabinets, high-impact composite enclosures that give us exactly what we need all around the rink.”
The Zx5 features the newest generation of EV components: the all-new DXV3150, 500W, 15-inch woofer and the all-new 2-inch neodymium ND2 compression driver. It is rated for 600 watts long-term power handling and is able of producing high SPLs whilst providing a very smooth frequency response, ideal for even distribution over an open expanse of ice. 6x ZX5s are situated around the rink, mounted on truss towers with lighting. Amplification for these speakers comes from EV CP 3000s.
OneBigStar’s client required the option of routing dedicated audio and vision to three discrete zones. This has been achieved using a Cloud zoner allowing audio input routing and level control for each zone, with the addition of ‘mic over music’ priority on each channel. Each zone has a dedicated pro DVD player connected to Panasonic 10 Series plasma screens. With the ice rink designated as zone 1, the other two zones cover the temporary marquees and changing areas; each of these is serviced by a pair of Electro-Voice Evid 4.2s high quality foreground/background music speakers.
OneBigStar has completed a number of sound installations in high-profile leisure and entertainment venues, making use of Electro-Voice products, and Simon Taylor confirms that the company “really identifies with the EV brand. It’s a big range, and we can find solutions to solve virtually any problem we encounter.”
