Camera Wire Effects from Stage Technologies

A large camera was flown using automation technology at the Shepperton Studios recently to film the new fantasy adventure movie The Golden Compass. This technique is known in the industry as 'camera wire effects'. The flying camera was used to film scenes against Greenscreen, the green backdrop that allows the creative team to drop impressive backgrounds into the action. The effects were automated by Stage Technologies to enable fast, repeatable flying camera movements. The film has been created from author Phillip Pullman's first book in the award winning trilogy, His Dark Materials and is due to be released in December 2007.

The Golden Compass tells a story of an exciting parallel world centred around a 12-year old girl names Lyra. Two BigTow winches and a Nomad control console were supplied and operated by Stage Technologies to fly a high spec Arri camera on an advanced Libra camera bracket along an 80m wire. This method was used to film scenes of snow covered woodlands and fields, with the camera moving at speeds of up to 6m/s.

'Bond Girl' Eva Green performs along side Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig in this movie, being pursued on a broomstick in her role as the witch. Clever filming techniques are used to produce magical results as Eva and her aerial artist are whisked through the air using the same 80m camera wire and BigTow winches used for filming. The winches were also used to pull a sleigh through the snow at ground level.
