Clive Davis Pre-Grammy Party Adds Sennheiser to the Guest List

Music's second biggest night, the Clive Davis pre-Grammy gala at the Beverly Hilton, was the traditional glittering affair this year, where nominees, presenters, record industry executives and celebrities rubbed shoulders as a string of A-list music performers took to the stage. Delicate Productions of Camarillo, California once again provided the sound equipment for the annual event, outfitting the stage with Sennheiser wired and wireless microphones for performances by Smokey Robinson, Black Eyed Peas, Akon, and the night's highlight, Jennifer Hudson.
"We used 16 channels of the Sennheiser EM550G2 wireless microphone receivers, with SKM935G2 handhelds," says monitor engineer Scott Scherban. "There were eight channels of EW300IEMG2 in-ear systems." The setup also included two Sennheiser NET1 wireless management systems, providing control, monitoring and management of the microphone and IEMs. Onstage, covering the house band backline, he adds, "We had everything from the Sennheiser e914 to the e906.
"As Scherban reports, Delicate Productions has been providing sound production equipment for the event for nearly ten years, and has long relied on Sennheiser for the wired and wireless microphones and IEM systems. With some of the recording industry's biggest movers and shakers in the room, everything has to work flawlessly. "Being the show that it is, it's imperative to have something that won't fail you, because everyone in that room is the business," says Scherban.
Sennheiser wired microphones ran the gamut for drums and percussion: e901 for kick, e905s for snare and bongos, e914 condensers for hi-hat and miscellaneous percussion, e604s for the rack and floor toms, and an e945 for timbales.
The house band and guest guitar backline amps were covered by Sennheiser e906 and e609SILVER mics, with an e901 and two MD 409s provided for the keyboard Leslie cabinet. For brass, Delicate Productions sent along Sennheiser MD 421s for trombone and sax, with e945s for the trumpets.
A couple of the night's featured artists brought their own vocal microphones, shares Scherban, but the majority opted for the Sennheiser systems, which included four e945s set up for background vocals. Motown legend Smokey Robinson offered up an impromptu version of "My Girl" when Justin Timberlake proved to be a no-show, and a last-minute fill-in performance of "Let's Get It Started" by Black Eyed Peas, following songs from Christina Aguilera and Akon, also helped make up for the gap in the schedule.
Accompanied by an acoustic guitarist, Pink gave a rousing rendition of "Me and Bobby McGee," made famous by Janis Joplin, but the star of the night was Jennifer Hudson. The Oscar-nominee and former "American Idol" contestant had earlier walked the red carpet with Davis, who will executive produce her debut album. She turned in the solo performances of the evening, delivering "And I'm Telling You" and "I Am Changing" from the Oscar-nominated film, "Dreamgirls."
