Wideline Rocks in Mittelfest’s Stone Quarry

Some of the more recent events on which the company has used its QSC ISIS WideLine arrays have included open-air concerts by the orchestra and chorus of Genoa’s Carlo Felice theatre, with music ranging from opera, through the classics to the Beatles. For these events, the subwoofers used were a pair of QSC WL218S-sw and the powerhouse comprised QSC PL 236 and 230 amplifiers.

Another interesting event was Cividale del Friuli’s MittelFest, a festival of the performing arts under the artistic direction of Moni Ovadia, which offers a stimulating showcase spanning the artistry of Central Europe, as well as shows involving the whole town of Cividale. The recent festival ended with a unique event in terms of both content and location. The 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights was ‘performed’ by actors and musicians at the Tarpezzo stone quarry in San Pietro al Natisone.

FOH engineer was Corrado Cristina, long-standing collaborator and consultant with Pelliciari’s firm, who explained, “We made wide use of QSC’s ISIS WideLine array at the MittelFest – using a similar set-up to Genoa for the classical music concerts in the town square as for those held in the quarry.”

The latter consisted of spoken word and a concert for violin, cello, percussion, piano and recitals, with live electronics by Milan’s Studio Barman. Co-produced by Sorrento Festival and MittelFest 2006, this too was an absolute first, and the percussionist was eclectic composer, conductor and writer Carlo Boccadoro (who for the occasion played a ‘harp’ made from slabs of stone from the quarry, cut in such a way as to be ‘tuned’ differently and miked by Cristina). For aesthetic reasons, the systems were stacked on the stage and the set-up comprised four WL2102 per side with QSC WL218-sw subs, powered by PL 236 and 230 power amplifiers.

A freelance engineer and consultant, Corrado Cristina works regularly with Mordente, and was called in by Pelliciari for consultancy before the pair chose the QSC ISIS WideLine system: Mordente placed an initial order for 12 systems, but has since enlarged its stock.

Although having only one opportunity for a direct A/B comparison with another system, due to his work with other companies Cristina has been exposed to a number of other rigs.

But he was left in no doubt. “I’ve used a large variety of systems, but I really like the QSC array for its great definition at the top end of the audio spectrum — which is not found in other set-ups. In venues with acoustic problems, such as long reverb times which can be problematic, the sound is much more upfront and better focused than other systems I have used.”
