ABTT to Sponsor The Theatres Trust Conference 07

Championing Performing Theatres? Is the title of The Theatres Trust’s Conference 07, and major sponsor ABTT, the Association of British Theatre Technicians, has announced its support for the first annual conference to be hosted by the Trust.

‘Performing Theatres?’ follows on from the successful 2006 ABTT Theatre, Architecture and Engineering Conference and develops the need for there to be a stronger profile for users in setting out requirements for building and refurbishing theatres.

Raising issues about how best to maximise theatre design in the 21st Century, the Performing Theatres? Conference is chaired by Ian Brown, Artistic Director, West Yorkshire Playhouse, Genista McIntosh and Venu Dhupa, Director of Creative Innovation, Southbank Centre. The one-day event promises to offer a lively and wide-ranging debate on how the design of theatres will meet our needs in the 21st Century.

Perfectly complementing ABTT’s annual Theatre Show, which highlights technological innovation and presents a comprehensive range of products and services for professionals and non - technical users involved with equipping, refurbishing or up-grading their drama studio, theatre, auditorium or multi-purpose performance space, there is a natural synergy between the events.

The ABTT Theatre Show Director, Roger Fox, commented: “The Show provides Performing Theatres? Conference delegates with the opportunity to experience first hand the ideas and technologies that can realise users needs. The End-to-End Party will also encourage the Show’s exhibitors to meet Conference delegates. This epitomises what the ABTT Theatre Show is all about, encouraging dialogue between end users and manufacturers. It illustrates how through collaboration, technology can be best used to make theatres ‘smart’ and ‘intelligent’ in line with the demands of contemporary productions.”

The Theatres Trust’s Director, Mhora Samuel, added: “ We’ve timed the Performing Theatres? Conference to run the day before The ABTT Theatre Show. This will encourage further discussion and idea-sharing on the role that technology plays in theatres’ design, no matter how large or small, old or new. The aim of Conference 07 is to identify some key principles that users would like to see taken on board in theatre design. Ensuring design responds to users needs will mean theatres are more able to keep up with contemporary demands and help to safeguard their long term future.
