ADLIB Supplies Kelly Jones

ADLIB supplied full lighting production and - in conjunction with Capital Sound - PA for the recent Kelly Jones tour.
The Stereophonics front man’s high profile solo tour sold out in minutes, visited a series of high profile theatre and concert hall style venues, and has been hailed as a massive critical success. He played his acclaimed new ‘Only The Names Have Been Changed’ album in its entirety, and wrapped the set up with a small selection of acoustically re-worked Stereophonics classics. He was accompanied by his guitar, his unique voice and ample charisma, and backed for some of the set by a string trio and keyboardist Tony Kirkham.
ADLIB came onboard through tour manager Neil MacDonald. ADLIB project manager Phil Kielty says: “It’s been really great working with an artist of Kelly Jones’ calibre. The show looked and sounded stunning, featured some great teamwork (both crew and production-wise) and the whole vibe was excellent.”
Lighting was designed by Paul Moss (known industry-wide as ‘Moose’) who was highly recommended by Nick Jevons from Electric Fly Productions. Moose’s brief was to make it dark, moody and shadowy with no direct illumination of Jones’ face - and no beam movement during songs. These were all challenging directions to which he completely rose to the occasion.
Using only 12 moving lights - eight High End Studio Beam wash fixtures and four Martin Professional MAC 550 profiles – all floor based, plus three panels of starcloth at the back – he produced a tasteful, discreet and highly dramatic show, pushing the principals of ‘less is more’ to the brink of creativity.
The eight wash fixtures were arranged in a circular configuration around the performance area, with the MAC 550s slightly raised, and placed in a line along the upstage edge. With a heavy concentration on primary colours, and lots of emotive shadows, silhouettes and beam slicing effects, the show elicited a single different lighting look for each song. Intimate, simple and very sexy – just the ticket! He operated the show using one of ADLIB’s Hog iPC consoles.
It was Moose’s first tour with ADLIB, but he hopes it won’t be the last. “They have been brilliant,” he says. “Everything has run like clockwork and the support is just superb.” ADLIB also supplied Tim Spilman as crew.
ADLIB also supplied a Nexo Alpha speaker system consisting of four M3 tops, four B1 bass units and two ST subs a side, complete with Camco Vortex amps powering the mids and tops, and Crown VZ500s driving bass and subs.
At front-of-house was engineer Dave Roden who has mixed the Stereophonics for the last 11 years. Sonically, this show was all about subtlety, clarity and coverage, for which the Nexo Alpha is perfect, specially for the small to medium sized venues on the itinerary. Roden has previously worked with ADLIB on many one-offs and says: “They have really looked after me – it’s all been very smooth.” ADLIB supplied top systems engineer Steve Pattison and James Coates as crew.
Pattison adds that the sensitive and discerning 35 degree dispersion of the Nexo Alpha system makes it ideal for this style of performance and types of venues. “It’s just very straightforward to array,” he says.
Consoles and monitors (mixed by Dave Retson) for the tour were supplied by Capital Sound, and the band carried their own mics.
