Beacon for Eurovision
For the sixth year in a row, Peppe Tannemyr and Lennart WŒhlin, graphic designers at Beacon DigiGobos, are part of the Swedish-Finnish team producing all the graphic and lighting design for the Eurovision Song Contest – one of the world’s largest live events and TV productions. It is estimated that close to 300 million viewers will watch the live broadcast from Hartwall Arena in Helsinki.
"We are working with lighting designer Mikki Kunttu and a team of operators on site in Helsinki, from April 2 to the semi-finals May 10 and the final on May 12. As we receive the acts, we program the graphics for five Hippotizer Media Servers," Peppe Tannemyr says, adding that they will use the latest beta of Hippotizer version 3 for the event.
The lighting of 42 songs, introductions, and intermission acts involves thousands of cues and hundreds of gigabytes of graphics, which are rendered by a dozen of PowerMac G5 computers from the Beacon team. In total, the team will deliver some 2000 square metres of lighting and video, a record in itself. And for the first time all material is time-coded, meaning that everything is programmed according to the time line of each song, thus enabling "autorun" graphics.
"Even if we have been involved for some time with our network, we look forward to this new challenge in a new country with new people to work with and the challenge of all-new technology," says Ola Melzig, production manager for Spectra+, which has been named the official lighting and technical supplier for the sixth year in a row. This means they provide the lighting, video, and rigging as well as production planning, logistics, lighting design, and technical coordination.
"We are naturally proud to have been chosen again to do the artistic design of all the digital material for the Hippotizer systems and video projection. For the seventh year in a row, Beacon is also the sponsor of all the custom made gobos," says Michael Tannemyr, president of Beacon.
