Going Loco In KOKO with The Cooper Temple Clause
In the end, it was all over so fast. 12 noon came and went, the panel of judges made their final decision about two bands, and the public votes — from a staggering total of 12,626 cast — were totted up to decide the third band. From the original group of 20 bands, whittled down from over 800 who originally entered, three have now been chosen to go through to the final of AKG's 2007 Unsigned Heroes competition, which is being held at Camden's KOKO on Thursday, April 26th.
The judges, drawn from the offices of Harman Pro UK, distributor for AKG microphones in the UK and Eire, argued fiercely about who should go through to the final. In the end, the winner for the Northern region was Liverpool's the Kashmirs, with their fast and furious 'Fall By The Way Side', while the Southern Region winner was Hitchin's Flamboyant Bella, with the piano-driven stomper 'Crazy Cool'.
But it was the web-based public voting, which closed at midnight last night, that astounded everybody. "We thought we'd get a couple of thousand votes, but at one point yesterday, I was checking the Unsigned Heroes web site every few minutes, and each time I looked, there had been a few hundred more votes!" says Amanda Chester, marketing manager for Harman Pro UK. "The site rejected multiple votes from the same email address, so there were obviously a lot of very motivated fans of the bands out there!" The top two bands remained neck and neck to right near the end, but as the midnight deadline passed, it was London's The Standards, with the high-octane 'Some Singers' and their cracking Beatles-esque harmonies, that had won the day.
"We've been really knocked out by this response — it just goes to show how vibrant the UK's new music scene is," says Amanda Chester. "We're all looking forward to the final now — all 20 bands were really strong, and the three that have made it through are brilliant. And with the Cooper Temple Clause playing a set at KOKO too, we know we're in for a great night of music on April 26th. Congratulations to the three finalists, and well done to everyone else who took part — you were all heroes to us, and there's always next year's competition..."
